A Photographer’s Perspective on Cherishing Your Wedding Day

Your wedding day – a day you’ve been dreaming of, planning for, and anticipating. It’s a day filled with love, laughter, and the promise of a beautiful future. However, as a seasoned wedding photographer, I’ve witnessed countless couples grappling with unexpected challenges on their big day – be it unruly weather or unforeseen delays in the timeline. In this blog post, I’ll delve into the importance of embracing the unpredictable nature of your wedding day, finding beauty in imperfections, and the significance of cherishing every moment, even if things don’t go exactly as planned. Jess and Greg had a beautiful wedding day in August of 2023 and I’ve never seen two people who took in every single moment with such excitement, love and gratitude for their wedding day.

The Unpredictable Element: Weather:

One of the most significant factors that can throw a curveball on your wedding day is the weather. Rain, wind, or unexpected temperature fluctuations can be disheartening, especially when you’ve envisioned a perfect, sunny day. However, seasoned photographers will tell you that there’s a unique beauty in capturing moments amidst the raindrops or under a cloudy sky.

  1. Rainy Day Magic:
    • Rain can add a touch of romance to your wedding photos. The soft droplets create a dreamy atmosphere that enhances the emotional resonance of the moment.
    • Equip yourself with stylish umbrellas and embrace the rain. Candid shots of you and your partner sharing an intimate moment under an umbrella can turn into cherished memories.
  2. Golden Hour Glory:
    • Overcast skies can provide a soft, diffused light that photographers often refer to as the “golden hour.” This lighting is incredibly flattering and adds a warm, ethereal glow to your photos.
    • Embrace the moody atmosphere and let your photographer work their magic. You might be surprised at how stunning your photos turn out, even without the sun shining brightly.
  3. It’s getting hot in here
    • Sometimes we have to content with high heat and in this case there are a few things to help combat high temps. I bring a portable fan to all spring, summer and fall weddings. This helps for momentary reprieve from the temps
    • Ladies put your hair up! This helps keep you cooler and your hair doesn’t fall flat after perspiration and humidity.
    • If you are getting married in a warmer month, consider choosing a venue with an escape into air conditioning. It’s easy to grab a few photos outside and then hot into the AC to cool off.

The Unpredictable Element: Delays in the Timeline:

In the realm of wedding planning, delays are almost inevitable. Whether it’s hair and make up running behind, the ceremony running longer than expected, or technical difficulties, it’s essential to maintain a flexible mindset. As a photographer, I’ve found that some of the most candid and genuine moments arise during these unexpected pauses.

  1. Spontaneous Moments:
    • When things don’t go according to the meticulously planned timeline, couples often find themselves in spontaneous, unplanned situations. These moments can lead to some of the most authentic and heartwarming photographs.
    • Instead of stressing about the schedule, embrace the unplanned moments. Laugh off the hiccups and let your photographer capture the beauty in the spontaneity.
  2. Candid Connections:
    • Delays offer a unique opportunity for you to connect with your guests on a deeper level. Use this time to share a quiet moment with your loved ones, creating memories that go beyond the posed photographs.
    • Candid shots of laughter, hugs, and shared stories during unexpected breaks can add a layer of authenticity to your wedding album.

The Importance of Presence Over Perfection:

Your wedding day is a celebration of love and the union of two souls. It’s a day when you’re surrounded by everyone you love. As a photographer, I see that the couples who enjoy their wedding day the most are less worried about the timeline and embrace spending time with their loved ones.

  1. Cherishing Loved Ones:
    • Your wedding day might be the only occasion when all your loved ones are gathered in one place. Take a moment to appreciate this unique gathering and celebrate the joy of being surrounded by family and friends.
    • Candid group shots, impromptu dances, and heartfelt conversations are often the treasures of a wedding day. Allow yourself to be fully present and enjoy these precious moments.
  2. Flawless Imperfections:
    • Perfection is a subjective concept, and the pursuit of it can be exhausting. Embrace the imperfections – the wind tousling your hair, the raindrops on your gown, or the unexpected pauses in the timeline.
    • Realize that these imperfections are what make your wedding day uniquely yours. The genuine, unscripted moments are the ones that will stand out in your memories and photographs.

As a wedding photographer, I’ve learned that the true beauty of a wedding day lies in its unpredictability. The moments when things don’t go as planned often become the highlights of the day – the stories you’ll share and cherish for years to come. Embracing the weather, accepting delays, and prioritizing the joy of the present over the pursuit of perfection will not only result in stunning photographs but also a more memorable and enjoyable wedding day. So, when the raindrops fall or the schedule takes an unexpected turn, remember that these are the moments that will make your wedding day uniquely beautiful. Cherish them, embrace them, and let your love story unfold naturally, just as it should.
